It’s election day, and for many, it brings up feelings of stress and unease.
As uncertainty lingers, you must remember what you need for self-care today. Personally, I will take a step back from scrolling on social media and will not entertain conversations that raise my blood pressure. Today should be treated as a mental health day for good reason, as should the days to follow.
Taking care of yourself today can look like this:
Deciding what conversations you will entertain: Some discussions are not worth the stress. If you find yourself having a circular conversation, address it by expressing your boundaries and choosing to end a conversation that is not progressing forward.
Manage your social media use: Today might be a day when your cell phone has to stay far, far away from you, or it might mean putting your phone on Do Not Disturb to protect your peace.
Voting in peace: You are not obligated to share your vote with others. If you want to keep your vote private, that is entirely up to you and can help mitigate the stress and pressure of feeling like you have to go public with your choice.
Engaging in hobbies or healthy escapism: Today might be a good day to re-watch an old TV show or listen to music that evokes feelings of nostalgia to regulate your nervous system. I’m currently watching Insecure for the 5th time, lol. It’s my go-to when I need a good laugh and a way to escape from the heaviness happening in my own life and not just in the world.
In the latest episode of Mindful With Minaa, I discuss more tips and tools for managing election day stress and anxiety. Tune in wherever you listen to your podcasts, and please don’t forget to rate the show and leave a review.
