Burnout is characterized as a form of mental and emotional exhaustion. Studies show that the symptoms of burnout can vary depending on gender and that men typically experience depersonalization, whereas women may experience mental and emotional fatigue. Either way, burnout can take a toll on the body because it is a form of chronic stress, and prolonged stress impacts the body’s hormone levels, including cortisol. It can lead to mental health issues like anxiety and depression, but it can also create physiological symptoms such as hypertension, insomnia, headaches, and even gut imbalances.
